'PINE HURST, N.H.': The Rev. Elmer Eugene Parmelee (1839-1861)
Dan Steele, Daniel Everett, Asaph, Jonathan, Joshua, John, John

The Baptist minister was an instructor of drawing and painting in the grammar school of New York University in 1860. Several of his landscape paintings were exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1857-1861.

This painting, on which the artist has written "Pine Hurst, N.H." in the corner next to his initials, came to me by way of Barbi Tomko in 2001. Her daughter has one of the reverend's paintings and an uncle has one or two. "There should be five more somewhere," she said.

Unfortunately, the canvas has puckered over time and the flash from the camera has accentuated these distortions.
