PRINCETON ROWING TEAM: Dr. George Dubois Parmly (1856-1889)
Ehrick Alexander, Eleazer, Eleazer, Jehiel, Stephen, Stephen, John, John

The university's crews of the 1870s and '80s rowed on the Delaware & Raritan Canal out of boathouses on the south and the north sides of the canal.

Pictured here is Princeton's first boathouse and the members of the 1875 six-man: B. Nicoll (1877, stroke), left, F. Biddle (1875, five), George Dubois Parmly (1876, four), R. J. Hall (1875, three), W. B. Van Lennep (two), B. Hall (1875, spare) and J.S. Ely (1877, bow).

Hall was a substitute, and the crew that raced at Saratoga in 1875 was composed of the other six. Cornell won this regatta; Princeton did not cross the line as George fainted and fell over in the shell. In 1874, Princeton had placed eighth in a time of 18:38.

George vindicated himself in 1876 as captain and went on to coach the Princeton crews.

After graduating in 1876, he returned to Princeton to receive his Master of Arts in 1879, and his medical degree in 1800 from the College of Physicians and Surgeons. George never married. He died in Spokane, Wash.
