This oil portrait, painted by Thomas Sully (1783-1872), is believed to be that of young Samuel. The 27 3/4" x 24 3/4" painting was being sold online by the Empire Gallery in Los Angeles in 2002.

I've also found a mention of him in an 1825 letter about the death of his father.
